Begin by asking exactly what services the agent will provide, who will perform them and how success will be measured. Request the agent’s registration information, states served, disciplinary history and experience with athletes in the same sport and stage.

Ask how the agent is paid, whether commissions apply to every opportunity, and whether referral fees or other compensation may be received. Clarify exclusivity, contract length, renewal, termination and what happens to pending deals after the relationship ends.

Do not let a polished presentation replace independent verification. Take the proposed agreement home, compare answers with the written contract and consider qualified legal review before committing.

Protect their opportunity. Prepare for their future.
