When NIL income arrives without withholding, the bank balance can create a false sense of spending power. Moving a portion into a separate reserve immediately creates a visible boundary between potential tax obligations and available cash.

The appropriate amount depends on the athlete’s complete circumstances, including other income, residence, business expenses and filing status. A generic percentage is not a substitute for individualized tax advice.

Keep payment records, contracts, receipts and mileage documentation together. Good records make professional guidance more efficient and reduce the stress of tax season.

Protect their opportunity. Prepare for their future.
