The best time to establish a family approach to NIL is before an offer appears. Start with the athlete’s goals, comfort level and definition of success. A parent’s role is to create room for thoughtful decisions—not to take control of an adult athlete’s opportunity.
Discuss who will review messages, which information stays private, and how quickly the family expects to respond. Decide when an attorney, tax professional or other qualified specialist should be consulted. Write the questions down so pressure does not erase good judgment.
Finish with a simple agreement about communication. Revisit it as the athlete matures, changes schools or begins earning income. A family game plan is nonbinding, but shared expectations can prevent avoidable conflict.
